We care more about ventures that aim to improve human systems than those that aim to create new tools and products. Human systems are complex, challenging, and slow to change because they require overcoming inertia and reaching consensus before adoption. Many ventures that resonate with us might not become widely adopted, but they're still vital and needed. YC is teaching founders to build something people want, and we crossed over to the lonely camp that wants to see founders building something people need (and want).
